Mud Scrub: DIY

What is Mud Scrub you ask.
Well, basically it’s a sugar and coffee scrub.

I love it!
Especially because the coffee has such great benefits for your skin.
Coffee and Caffeine are showing up all over in beauty products due to their tightening and antioxidant effects on the skin.

Caffeine, works on skin in the three primary ways:
as a vasoconstrictor, an antioxidant, and a diuretic
.

Applied topically caffeine helps to redistribute fat cells and decrease the formation of cellulite. It also acts as a vasorestrictor, tightening and shrinking blood vessels thereby helping eliminate varicose veins.

Guess what! It can make you feel more alert too,
because you associate the smell with the invigorating effects of drinking coffee.
(It's a learned response.)

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

What you will need:

1 C Sugar (white, brown, cane)
5 TBSP Coffee grounds
1/4 C oil
(veggie oil, almond oil, extra virgin olive oil, baby oil…)
1 tsp Peppermint Extract
1 tsp Vanilla Extract

082

Mix:

Mix sugar and coffee.
Add small amounts of oil to the sugar/coffee mix until everything is coated.
(You may not need the full 1/4 C, I didn’t use all of it)
Add any fragrance you like. I chose to use Peppermint and Vanilla and they blend well with the coffee aroma.
Mix well. and You’re done.
If you find it a little watery from the oil, just add more sugar and or coffee.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

This recipe can be tweaked to your liking.

A few tips:

◦ If you have sensitive skin, do not add coffee grounds and use brown sugar (as it is less abbrasive)
◦ If you would like a coarser scrub, try 1/2 C of sugar and 1/2 C of coffee grounds.

It’s the weekend for most of you. ENJOY IT!

  12. this is going to make a great go-to around my house, i work in a kitchen..all through culinary school i could NEVER find a good soap to remove the onion/garlic smell from my hands. i literally tried everything! until someone told me to massage my old coffee grinds into my hands...it works! so not only does coffee/caffeine do everything that you’ve listed above...it takes care of the "kitchen" smell! i haaaave to try this scrub!

  13. I love the sound of this scrub! Can you please clarify if you're using raw ground coffee or coffee grounds that have been brewed?

  14. Hi! I found your site through Pinterest. Do you have an idea of how long this will keep? I was thinking of making some for Christmas gifts and shipping them to my girl friends!

  15. Karla- raw coffee grounds

Erica- as long as it's sealed in an air tight container it should last at the least a few months.

  18. I really need to make some of this. I just have a question... do you use all three kinds of sugar or just one of the three?

  19. Thank you so much for this! Found this through Pinterest, and just now made some using coffee from my K-cups, brown sugar, coconut oil, and peppermint extract. It smells divine!! I've made brown sugar/oil scrubs before and love them. This just makes it even better! Coconut oil is solid at room temp, so I warmed it up just a bit by running hot water over the outside of the jar and was able to pour enough out to make the scrub. If it solidifies now, I know it will melt in the shower. Love the way it makes my skin feel...I used it all over. Thanks again!!

  20. Hi, I have 2 questions..
1- how often can this be used? can it be an every day scrub? for shower.. (to use in my legs, since is where I have cellulite)
2- what is exactly coffee grounds? (I'm not from USA and couldn't find a decent translation) is it like instant coffee? or coffee beans? what is it?
Thanks!! can't wait to try it!

    1. I will answer based on my experience after making this yesterday. I used instant coffee because my family doesn't drink coffee and I had some instant coffee in the cabinet for recipes. My scrub was very, very dry. I ended up doubling the oil to get a good consistency for a scrub. With that experience, I would guess that the recipes wants the coffee grounds that are left after brewing coffee (nice and wet). That way, your oil isn't being soaked up by your instant coffee. Hope that makes sense and helps.
